A colorful gouache painting depicting a row of beach huts by the water, set against a bright, sun-filled landscape. Bold blocks of red, blue, yellow and green give the composition an almost graphic quality, while the simplified forms create a playful, modern feel. A joyful work with a distinctly mid-century character.

Artist: Axel Olson (1899–1986)

Axel Olson grew up on the Lorentzberg farm outside Halmstad. In 1929, he and five other young artists from the area — Sven Jonson, Waldemar Lorentzon, Stellan Mörner, Erik Olson and Esaias Thorén formed the Halmstad Group. The group became known for bringing surrealism, cubism and geometric abstraction into Swedish modernism.

Although each artist later developed a distinct style, they remained close and continued exhibiting together throughout their lives. The Halmstad Group was never formally dissolved and remained together for 50 years, until Stellan Mörner’s death in 1979. Axel Olson continued working throughout his long career and died in 1986.
