Behind the Scenes: The Heart and Hustle of Running a Small Business
At Vintage Works, what you see on our website or social media is just the tip of the iceberg. Running an online vintage business is a constant dance of creativity, logistics, and hands-on work, all driven by our passion for curating unique pieces with a story to tell. Here’s a glimpse behind the scenes of what keeps us moving day in and day out.
The never-ending hunt for unique finds
Sourcing new pieces is a never-ending task - and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Every item in our collection is handpicked with one guiding principle: if we would keep it in our own home, then it belongs in our collection. Whether it's scouting auctions, estate sales, or even those surprise discoveries, we’re always on the lookout for items with character and charm that fit the Vintage Works ethos.
Cleaning, polishing, and photographing for the weekly drop
Once we've sourced an item, the real work begins. Each piece is carefully cleaned, and some receive a fresh polish to ensure they’re ready for their new homes.
Next is the photography process—where we focus on capturing each item's unique features. Whether it’s a mid-century lamp or a vintage painting, we take the time to showcase every detail, so you know exactly what to expect.
The daily post office run
What used to be a once-a-week trip to the post office has evolved into a daily occurrence, especially as the business has grown. Carefully wrapping items, finding the right boxes, and filling out customs declarations for international orders are just part of the process. We also take pride in using reused packaging as often as possible, staying true to our commitment to sustainability.
Collaborating with local craftspeople
We are fortunate to partner with talented craftspeople to breathe new life into the vintage pieces we find. From discussing framing options with expert framers to working with electricians on restoring vintage lighting, these collaborations ensure that each piece is fully functional and beautifully presented. We also work with a local seamstress for any textile repairs or alterations, giving fabrics and upholstery a fresh look while maintaining their vintage charm.
The admin side of the business
Of course, there’s a less glamorous side to the business - admin work. Managing inventory, processing orders, handling finances, and responding to customer inquiries are all critical tasks that keep Vintage Works running smoothly. It’s the behind-the-screens work that ensures we can focus on what we love most: finding and sharing unique vintage treasures.
At Vintage Works, every piece has a story, and every step in the process reflects our dedication to curating and delivering those stories to homes around the world. Thank you for being part of this journey with us!
